Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactures several damper lines, and the part you need depends on when your fireplace was built and how the flue was originally configured. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Famco changed the operator handle geometry in the mid-1990s. Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The pivot rod has either sheared at the weld point or the cast-iron frame has cracked around the bushing. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s a hard stop. You can check whether the handle set screw has simply backed out, a 5-minute fix with a 3/16″ Allen key if the damper is cool and the fire has been out for 24 hours. You can also verify the model stamp on the handle arm and measure your throat opening with a tape measure from the firebox.

What you should not do: attempt to free a seized pivot rod with penetrating oil and force, or try to remove a rusted plate from above without proper chimney access equipment. The plate weighs 8-14 pounds of cast iron and sits at the narrowest point of the flue, 8-12 feet above the firebox. Dropping it damages the flue liner, and working at that height without proper ladder positioning and fall protection is genuinely dangerous.
